Mindview (Belgium) interview with Agnes

- Since Even Song is quite unknown in Belgium, could you give us a short band history first?

The band was formed in the early summer of '97 by Gabor O., Mihaly and me. It started as a hobby, but after Gabor V. and Gergely joined the band it became more and more serious. At least we decided to go to a studio to record a demo tape(Lost Tales). We had some good reviews in Hungary and this one and only demo made name for Even Song in the Hungarian underground scene. *Although it was distributed only in Hungary we sent it to some foreign label and in the May of '98 Displeased Records offered us a contract for three years. After due consideration we signed to Displeased and in September we went to studio again  to record our debut album 'Path Of The Angels'.

- We're always interested in the musicians too. Tell us a bit about yourself (age, hobbies, studying/working, special interests...) or the other band members. What drives you in life?

Mihaly (death grunts, guitar) is 21 and studies. He's keen on literature especially on the works of William Blake. Gabor O. (lead guitar) is 23 and he's a real guitar fanatic. One of his favourite hobby is fishing.Gergely (bass) is 19. He studies in university and would like to be a matematician. He's a fantasy literature fan.Gabor V. (drums) is 20 and works as a waiter in a restaurant. As far as I know he hasn't got a special hobby. Agnes (female vocals, synth) 18 and learn painting and plastic art in an art school. These are her hobbies too. But of course the most important thing in our life is MUSIC.

- How did you team up with Displeased Records? Are they a good label for Even Song?

The first question has already been  answered before. We are very pleased with Displeased :-)(What a pun!) They are a correct and reliable label. They gave us a big chance to become known in abroad. As far as I know there's only one Hungarian metal band (Sear Bliss) besides us signed to a foreign label.

- The album has been released a few months now, how are the reactions so far? And what about sales figures?

We've already had some good reviews. The Cd came out in March and about 1500-2000 copies have been sold until today.

- How would you describe the metal scene in Hungary? Popular or underground? The bio says that Even Song is quite popular over there...

The Hungarian metal scene is quiet strong but there are very bad conditions for such a musical style here. The media is only interested in those damned techno and disco groups. So I must say that metal is still underground in Hungary.

- Do your Hungarian roots influence the kind of music you bring?

I might say so. There are a lot of beautiful and undisturbed landscapes here, still maintaining the virginity and pureness of nature. I think it could influence this kind of music.

- "Path of the Angels" shows excellent musicianship. I wonder if you've studied music or is this just practical experience?

We've studied music for years. I sang in a choir before joining the band.

- The piano parts are great!!!! In my opinion they add value to the music, otherwise Even Song would drown in the sea of gothic metal bands. What's your opinion on this?

Yes it's true that the piano parts add value to the music, but I think every instruments have important part in our music. But it's only my opinion.

- The concept of death grunts with angelic female voice has been done to death by many other bands in the genre... yet I still like it, that's why I gave the album a score of 5/7 in Mindview. But will you maintain this style in the future?

We know that we are not the first band working with this concept but that's the most perfect way to express our feelings (the duality of beauty and sadness). Our new album is in progress and although its musical style will be a little bit different from our debut album 'Path Of The Angels' we will maintain this concept.

- Is there a lyrical concept in "Path of the Angels"?

The lyrics are about the loss of beauty, about dreams and desires. The album- title 'Path Of The Angels' symbolises a way to a so-called dreamland.

- The album breathes depression and loveliness at the same time. Is that the way you feel in general?

Yes, this duality is characteristic of us. We still believe in dreams but stand on the ground of reality if you know what i mean.

- Can you tell me what's behind poetic song titles like "Where the devil slumbers" or "Requiem for a wingless bird"?

'Requiem for a wingless bird' was written to the memory of an old friend who died in the summer of '98. He was an ornithologist ,"a wingless bird". Maybe you've found out that there's only 8 songs instead of 9 on the Cd. "Where the devil slumbers" is the one that is not featuring on it, although it is appearing on the cover as our 4th song. We cancelled it in the last minute when the Cd cover was already done. So I think it is not important to tell anything about it.

- What holds the future for Even Song now? Will we be able to see you play live in Belgium some day?

Our new album is in progress so we spend most of our times in the rehearsing room. In spite of this we'd like to do some concerts in Hungary and abroad as well. We'd like Even Song to become a better-known band in the European metal scene.
