HISTORY and MISSION
The education of the Information
Technology (IT-knowledge) is not new at the Széchenyi István College, because the roots traced back to the
foundation period of the College. The College founded in 1968 has got the name College of Transport and
Telecommunication. In the early 70th there was already going on an intensive training in the field of
computing and information sciences. Later, at the beginning of 80th the application of the computers became
more and more important and Győr and its surroundings have played a very important industrial role in Hungary.
It was a great problem, that there was not any engineering training neither in Győr nor in the
industrial-developed northern part of Hungary, in the so-called Pannon Region, where a great number of
specialists in IT was needed. In that time the management of the College has decided to start a special course
in IT in order to meet the business needs and called a project into existence to develop a curriculum for the
introducing a new IT training. The project members (A. Jámbor, J. Kovács,
M. Raffai and M. Szörényi)
started to work on and prepared the document of the IT-course, which was accredited and introduced with 35
students in 1990i. A new IT-Department was needed to be responsible for
teaching the software and information engeneering. It is remarkable that
the number of the students shows a very dynamic progressive growth: 35 students in the Academic Year of
1990/91, but after that the number of students have been continuosly growing
as follows: 104, 144, 232, 254, 315, 250, 300, 450.
In the last decade of the 20th
Century we realized a significant, dynamic development process at the College, which is showed not only in the
increasing number of the students, but also in introducing new courses. The full-time students studying in
IT-course get their BSc degree after 3 academic years. After studying basic engineering subjects the students
may choose special modules from the 3rd semester on as follows: System Analyst and Design, Programming,
Application in various business fields (Transport, Medical, Postal knowledge). The degrees are awarded after
writing a thesis and passing the state examination. From 1995 on, there is a special IT-module for the
economist students as well, they can learn all the IT-knowledge necessary in the business life. In 1996 the
IT-Department managers performed a significant development in the labs. The old 386 computers were
replaced by Pentium Processor computers, so the students got to know and aquire the software and usage the
services of the Internet. Beyond the new lab the students can practice and use the Internet in nother 6 labs
equiped with 250 computers altogether.
Nowadays a very quick social-economic
metamorphosis goes on. In this globalization era the students need the most up-to-date knowledge, which is a
serious challenge for the teachers. The professors and the associates of the Information Technology Department
need to keep up with the progressive changes, so the students have to learn the newest technologies, methods,
modeling tools and programming languages.
We have to take into consideration,
that our graduates finish their studies already in the 21st Century so we are responsible to give them the
capability of long-life learning . The Academic Staff of the Department is ready to do the best for the
training on the highest level, so they are working now on the new academic reform based on the Bologna
Declaration.
New courses will be introduced, a
BSC-course in the field of Computer Engineering, and one of in the field of Business Information Applications.
This new courses results European Eunion wide acceptable diploma, which makes possible to free change into
institutes and also in workplaces.
Activity in Education and Scientific Research
1. Education, training
The
professors and assistants of the IT-Department are responsible for the development and actualisation of the study
plans, educational methods, they develop and introduce new technologies . They write books and prepare education
material. The educated subjects are as follows:

There are three different specialties
belonging to the IT Department:
-
information system engineering
-
effective business solutions
and
-
engineering on graphical
design.
Besides the educational tasks on the
course for IT specialities the collegues are teaching information technology for all of the 5 500 Students at
the College and they are taking part in the teleteaching system. The professors and the assistants are working
continuously on the training material, they are preparing new slides for the presentations, teaching material
for learning, tests for controlling the learned knowledge and they are writing books and workpapers as follows:

2. Scientific Research
The
collegues are working on interdisciplinar themes in connection with their specialty and education work. The most
interesting research fields are as follows:
-
development new educational and
training methodologies, and analysis their benefits
-
survey among the absolvated and already
working students, analysing their opinions
-
computer aided simulation systems in
application
-
object-oriented analysis and design
methods
-
intorduction of the software
engineering standard, the UML into the education
-
the challenge of the information
society
-
development of logistic systems
-
the importance and the application of
the EDI
In the frame of the scientific
research the collegues are working in cooperation with Hungarian and
international
partners. The results are presented on scientific conferences and published on different forms (books, Web
sites, journals etc.)
3.
Student's Scientific Research
There are some possibilities and themes, on wich the professors and
students can work together. There are conferences in every year, when the students present their results. At
our College the students with specialty on Information Technology are forced to use their knowledge to develop
new systems and techniques, and after about a year's work they could reach excellent results on the
conferences. The teachers, especially Márai Raffai, János Kovács and Tamás Hartványi are dealing with the best
students, which means yearly a number of 20-25 persons. The results are proved by the
awards, which are reached by the students in every
conferences.
Sorry, but the information concerning to the student's
scientific activity is available only in Hungarian!
